Cocktail glass

Cocktails served in a Cocktail glass

The V-shaped cocktail glass, often simply called a Martini glass, is the classic vessel for drinks served straight up without ice. On this page you find every recipe on CocktailLexicon that is served in it, from the Martini and the Cosmopolitan to the Aviation. Below the list you learn what the shape does for a drink and how to handle it without spilling.

Shape and purpose

The cocktail glass has a long stem and a wide, conical bowl. The stem keeps your hand away from the drink so it stays cold longer, and the wide surface releases aromas from citrus peel or gin botanicals. Typical sizes hold around 150 to 250 ml, although classic drinks are usually only 90 to 120 ml, which leaves room at the top.

Which drinks belong here

Stirred or shaken drinks served straight up, without ice: Martinis, Manhattans, Cosmopolitans and many sours.

Tips

Many bartenders now prefer a coupe or a Nick and Nora glass for the same drinks, because their curved bowls spill less.
