Chocolate Martini

Cold, silky and deeply chocolatey, with a bittersweet cocoa rim that you taste before the first sip. It sits somewhere between an after-dinner drink and the dessert itself.

Chocolate Martini

Taste

Rich chocolate and cocoa with a creamy, velvety texture and gentle warmth. Sweet and fairly strong.

History and origin

The Chocolate Martini belongs to the wave of sweet, flavored drinks that borrowed the Martini name and its V-shaped glass in the 1990s, alongside the Appletini and the Espresso Martini. Apart from the glass it has little in common with a classic Martini of gin and vermouth.

It grew popular as flavored vodkas and chocolate liqueurs spread through bars, and it became a standard dessert order in restaurants and hotel lounges. No single creator is known, and recipes range from very simple vodka and crème de cacao to creamier versions like this one. Its sweetness made it unfashionable for a while, but as a small dessert drink it still earns its place.

Bartender tips

  • Use white crème de cacao if you prefer a lighter color; dark gives a deeper brown.
  • For a less sweet drink, reduce the crème de cacao and add a dash of chocolate bitters.
  • Chill the glass well, as the rim holds best on a cold surface.

Variations

White Chocolate Martini
Use white chocolate liqueur and white crème de cacao.
Mocha Martini
Easy twist: add 20 ml fresh espresso for a coffee note.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Chocolate Martini a real Martini?

Not in the classic sense. It only shares the name and the glass with the gin and vermouth Martini.

Can I make it without cream?

Yes. Leave it out for a stronger, clearer drink, or use milk for a lighter texture.

What chocolate liqueur should I use?

A chocolate cream liqueur gives body; a clear crème de cacao adds cocoa flavor without making it heavy.
