Paradise

Sunset orange in the glass, with ripe apricot and fresh orange softening the gin's juniper edge. It is short, bright and gently sweet, the kind of drink that opens an evening rather than ending it.

History and origin

The Paradise is an interwar classic that appears in Harry Craddock's Savoy Cocktail Book of 1930, among other cocktail books of the period. Who created it is not known, but its simple formula of gin, apricot brandy and orange juice made it a lasting favorite.

In older recipes, apricot brandy usually means an apricot liqueur rather than a dry fruit brandy, and that is what gives the drink its round, fruity sweetness. Some early versions add a dash of lemon juice for extra freshness. The International Bartenders Association lists the Paradise among its Unforgettables and classes it as a pre-dinner drink, meaning an aperitif.

Bartender tips

  • Use a quality apricot liqueur; cheap ones taste of artificial flavoring and throw the drink off balance.
  • A dash of fresh lemon juice (about 5 ml) sharpens the drink if your oranges are very sweet.
  • Squeeze the orange juice fresh and strain it well, because pulp dulls the texture.

Variations
