Spinach and Kale Smoothie with Morello Cherries

Sour morello cherries from the jar bring so much fruit and colour that you hardly notice the greens. Their juice adds extra sweetness and tang.

About this smoothie

Morello cherries are a sour cherry variety that is mostly sold preserved in jars in Germany, which makes this smoothie easy to prepare all year. They taste intensely fruity and tart, and together with their juice they dominate both the flavour and the colour. Kale contributes vitamin C, vitamin K and fibre, baby spinach a milder green note. The result is a deep red, fruity smoothie with a hidden portion of greens.

Bartender tips

  • Check that the cherries are pitted; most jarred morellos are, but not all.
  • The jar juice is sweetened, so add more of it if the smoothie is too tart.
