Kale Smoothie with Oranges

Two whole oranges bring so much juice and sweetness that kale loses its sharp edge. Spinach makes the colour a deep, fresh green.

About this smoothie

Kale is a hardy winter cabbage and a staple of northern German cooking, where it is traditionally stewed. Raw in a smoothie it tastes green and slightly bitter, and it contains vitamin C, vitamin K and fibre. Oranges are the ideal partner, as their sweetness and acidity balance the cabbage flavour. Baby spinach adds a milder green note. A refreshing glass especially in winter, when both kale and oranges are in season.

Bartender tips

  • Always remove the tough kale stalks; they stay fibrous.
  • Massage the kale briefly with your hands to soften it.

Variations

Creamier
Add half a banana for a softer, sweeter smoothie.
