About this smoothie

Physalis, also known as cape gooseberry, has a sweet-sour, slightly tropical flavour and contains vitamin C and provitamin A. Avocado gives the smoothie a velvety texture and mostly unsaturated fats, so it is quite filling despite the short ingredient list. Fresh ginger brings a clean, warming heat. Because there is no sweet fruit like banana, the smoothie tastes rather tangy; a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup balances it.

Bartender tips

  • Add ginger gradually; young ginger is milder than old, fibrous roots.
  • A few ice cubes make it extra refreshing.

Variations

Fruity version
Add half a banana or a slice of pineapple for natural sweetness.

Frequently asked questions

Is it vegan?

Yes, if you sweeten with maple syrup instead of honey.

Does physalis need to be peeled?

No, just remove the papery husk and rinse the fruit.

Can I prepare it the night before?

Yes, keep it covered in the fridge and stir well before drinking; it tastes freshest right after blending.
