Avocado Lamb's Lettuce Smoothie with Blackberries

Blackberries turn this green smoothie a dark, dusky colour and add tartness. Avocado makes it creamy, the lamb's lettuce stays mild in the background.

About this smoothie

Avocado gives this smoothie its creamy base: its flesh is rich in mostly unsaturated fat and has a mild, buttery taste. Lamb's lettuce adds a gentle, nutty green note, and blackberries bring colour, fibre and a pleasant acidity.

Without banana or other sweet fruit, the result is less sweet than most smoothies. A teaspoon of honey or agave syrup helps if you prefer it sweeter. Mixing green leaves with dark berries gives an unusual greyish purple colour, but the taste is fresh and fruity.

Bartender tips

  • Add half a banana if you want it sweeter without honey.
  • Frozen blackberries make the smoothie colder and thicker.

Variations

With apple
Blend in half a red apple for more sweetness and freshness.

Frequently asked questions

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, if you use agave syrup or no sweetener.

Why is the colour so dark?

Green leaves and dark berries together make a purple grey tone; it does not affect the taste.

Can I use spinach instead of lamb's lettuce?

Yes, baby spinach works just as well.
