Blood Orange and Strawberry Smoothie
Taste
Fresh and tangy, with a berry-like citrus note, juicy pear sweetness and a light body.
About this smoothie
Blood oranges owe their red flesh to anthocyanins, the same pigments found in berries, and they taste a little like orange crossed with raspberry. Their season runs roughly from December to April, which makes this smoothie a bright spot in late winter, when imported or frozen strawberries fill the gap.
Pear adds sweetness, juice and body, so the drink does not taste like plain juice. Filleting the orange removes the bitter pith and membranes; if that is too fiddly, peel it thoroughly and remove the white parts. It is a fresh, tangy smoothie for breakfast.
Bartender tips
Remove as much white pith as possible; it makes the smoothie bitter.
Frozen strawberries work well in winter and make the drink colder.
Variations
Regular orange
Use a normal orange when blood oranges are out of season; the color will be coral instead of ruby.
