Blood Orange Strawberry Smoothie with Coconut Oil

Blood oranges bring a berry-like tartness that sits beautifully next to ripe strawberries. A juicy pear softens the acidity, and a spoon of coconut oil gives the glass a rounder, silkier feel.

Blood Orange Strawberry Smoothie with Coconut Oil

Taste

Fresh, tangy and fruity, with ripe strawberry up front, citrus in the middle and a smooth, slightly rounded finish.

About this smoothie

Blood oranges are in season in winter, which makes this smoothie a welcome splash of colour when most other fruit is imported. Their red flesh comes from anthocyanins, the same group of pigments found in many berries, and like all citrus fruit they are a good source of vitamin C.

The pear adds body and gentle sweetness, so no sugar is needed. Coconut oil is optional in spirit but worth trying: a small amount changes the texture more than the taste. Serve it for breakfast or as a fruity pick-me-up in the afternoon.

Bartender tips

  • Use coconut oil that is liquid or very soft; a hard lump may not blend in and can leave small flecks in a cold smoothie.
  • Out of blood orange season, a regular orange works, but the smoothie will be paler and slightly sweeter.

Variations

With yogurt
Replace half the water with natural yogurt for a creamier, more filling glass.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes. Frozen strawberries make the smoothie colder and thicker; add a little extra water if it gets too stiff.

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, all ingredients are plant based.

Do I have to add coconut oil?

No. It only adds a silkier texture, so you can leave it out without changing the flavour much.
