Taste
Light, juicy and cool, with sweet melon up front and a gently tart berry finish.
About this smoothie
This is a thirst quencher more than a filling meal. Watermelon is mostly water and naturally low in calories, while blackberries contribute fibre, vitamin C and their typical slightly winey flavour. Half an apple gives the mix a little more body and keeps the sweetness balanced.
It fits a hot afternoon, a light breakfast next to something more substantial, or the time after a walk or workout when you want something cold and fruity. The blackberry seeds stay in the drink, so blend it long enough for a smoother texture.
Bartender tips
Chill the melon well beforehand; this smoothie is best very cold and needs no ice.
If the seeds bother you, press the blended blackberries through a sieve before adding the rest.
Variations
With lime
Add 1 tbsp lime juice and a few mint leaves for a sharper, more refreshing version.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use frozen blackberries?
Yes. Frozen blackberries make the smoothie colder and slightly thicker; you may need a little more water.
Is this smoothie vegan?
Yes, it contains only fruit and water.
Can I prepare it ahead?
It is best fresh. Stored in a closed jar in the fridge, it keeps for a few hours but separates, so shake it before drinking.
