Blackberry Apple Smoothie

Apple and blackberry is a pairing people know from crumbles and pies, and it works just as well in a glass. The apple brings sweetness and body, the berries colour and a pleasant sharpness.

About this smoothie

Blackberries and apples ripen at around the same time in late summer, so this combination has a long tradition in European kitchens, from jams to baked desserts. In a smoothie the flavours stay fresh and fruity. Apples contain pectin and other fibre, and blackberries add further fibre and vitamin C.

This is a light, uncomplicated smoothie for breakfast or the afternoon. Since the apple peel stays in, a powerful blender gives the smoothest result; with a weaker machine, peel the apple first.

Bartender tips

  • A sweet red variety such as Gala or Fuji works better here than a very sour apple.
  • Frozen blackberries make the smoothie thicker and colder in summer.

Variations

Crumble style
Add a pinch of cinnamon and 1 tbsp rolled oats for a smoothie that tastes like apple blackberry crumble.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to peel the apple?

No. The peel blends in well in a strong blender and adds fibre; peel it only if your blender leaves pieces.

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, it contains only fruit and water.

Can I use milk instead of water?

Yes. Milk or a plant drink makes it creamier and more filling.
