Blackberry Banana Smoothie with Kale

Kale is the most robust of the smoothie greens, and blackberries are one of the few fruits bold enough to match it. Banana smooths out the edges.

  4. Blend everything with the water for about 60 seconds until smooth.

Taste

Fruity and tart with dark berry flavour, sweet banana and a mild, green cabbage note.

About this smoothie

Kale has a firm texture and a slightly bitter, cabbage-like flavour, so it needs strong fruit partners. Blackberries bring deep colour and a tart, wine-like taste, the banana adds sweetness and creaminess. Kale is known to contain vitamin K and vitamin C, and blackberries provide fibre.

Remove the tough central stalk before blending so the texture stays smooth. The smoothie makes a hearty breakfast and works well after a workout.

Bartender tips

  • Young kale or baby kale is milder and blends more easily.
  • Frozen blackberries work just as well and make the drink colder.

Variations

Spinach instead of kale
Use 30 g baby spinach for a milder taste.
