Arugula Blackberry Smoothie

Blackberries turn this green smoothie a deep purple, so nobody would guess it contains two kinds of leaves. The arugula shows up only as a gentle peppery note.

About this smoothie

Arugula, also called rocket, has a nutty, peppery flavour that can be strong on its own. Paired with sweet-tart blackberries and banana it becomes a pleasant background spice. Baby spinach adds more greens without changing the taste much.

Blackberries are known to provide fibre and vitamin C, and leafy greens vitamin K. The smoothie works well as a breakfast drink and is a good step for anyone moving from fruit smoothies to greener ones.

Bartender tips

  • Frozen blackberries are cheaper out of season and make the smoothie colder.
  • Reduce the arugula if you find it too peppery.

Variations

Blueberry
Use blueberries instead of blackberries for a milder, sweeter version.
