Watermelon is mostly water, so this smoothie is closer to a thick agua fresca than a creamy shake. The pear gives it a little body and a soft, honeyed sweetness.

Watermelon Pear Smoothie
Taste
Light and juicy, sweet and very refreshing, with a soft pear note and a pale pink colour.
About this smoothie
Watermelon has a very high water content and a mild, sweet flavour, which makes it one of the most refreshing fruits for summer drinks. Blended on its own it can be thin, so a ripe pear adds body and a gentle sweetness. A little lime juice sharpens the taste.
The original recipe used a lot of extra water; since the melon is so juicy, only a splash is needed here. Serve it well chilled on a hot afternoon or after a walk in the sun.
Bartender tips
Keep the melon in the fridge before blending, or freeze a few cubes and use them instead of ice.
Serve immediately: watermelon smoothies separate after a while. Stir briefly if that happens.
Variations
Mint cooler
Blend in a few mint leaves for an even fresher taste.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to remove the watermelon seeds?
The black seeds are best removed, as they can make the drink gritty. Soft white seeds can stay.
Can I prepare it ahead?
It separates quite quickly, so make it fresh or stir well before serving.
