Pineapple Banana Smoothie with Dates

Pineapple brings the juice and acidity, banana and yoghurt the creaminess. Two dates round it off with a soft, caramel-like sweetness instead of sugar.

Method

  1. Peel the pineapple, remove the hard core and cut it into chunks.
  2. Peel the banana; pit the dates and chop them roughly.
  3. Blend everything with the cold water for about 60 seconds so the dates break down fully.
  4. Pour into a glass and serve.

Taste

Juicy and tropical with a caramel sweetness from the dates and a creamy, smooth body.

About this smoothie

Dates are among the oldest cultivated fruits in the Middle East and North Africa. In smoothies they work as a natural sweetener: soft Medjool dates blend easily and taste of caramel and honey.

Here they balance the tart, juicy pineapple, which is rich in vitamin C, while banana and yoghurt give the drink body. The result is sweet without any added sugar, though dates do contain plenty of natural sugar themselves. A good breakfast smoothie or a snack before exercise.

Bartender tips

  • Firm, dry dates blend better after soaking in warm water for 10 minutes.
  • Canned pineapple in juice works if fresh is not available; drain it first.

Variations

With coconut
Replace the water with coconut drink for a piña colada style smoothie without alcohol.
