Lamb's Lettuce Smoothie with Nectarine and Spirulina

Spirulina turns the golden nectarines into an olive green, but the taste stays surprisingly fruity. Sweet stone fruit is one of the best partners for the strong alga.

About this smoothie

Spirulina is a blue green alga sold as powder, valued for its protein content and very strong colour. Its slightly sea like flavour needs a sweet, fragrant partner, and ripe nectarines do that job well. Lamb's lettuce adds a mild, nutty green note.

This smoothie is a good way to try spirulina for the first time, since the fruit softens its taste. Start with half a teaspoon or less and increase slowly if you like it.

Bartender tips

  • Mix the spirulina in with the liquid first to prevent lumps.
  • Rinse the blender right away, as spirulina stains.

Variations

Banana base
Add half a banana for a creamier smoothie that hides the spirulina even more.

Frequently asked questions

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, all ingredients are plant based.

What does spirulina taste like?

Slightly salty and mineral. With sweet fruit it becomes quite subtle.

Can I use frozen nectarines?

Yes, frozen slices work well and make the smoothie colder and thicker.
