This is breakfast you can drink: blueberries, fruit and oats blended with milk into a thick, lilac smoothie. It tastes a little like blueberry porridge, only cold.

About this smoothie

Oats are a classic breakfast grain and contain fibre, including beta-glucan. In a smoothie they add body and make the drink more filling, especially together with milk, which brings protein and calcium.

Blueberries give the smoothie its colour and a sweet-tart flavour; their dark pigments are called anthocyanins. Banana and pear add natural sweetness, so the agave syrup is only needed if your berries are very tart. A good option for busy mornings.

Bartender tips

  • Soak the oats in the milk for five minutes first for a silkier texture.
  • Use frozen blueberries for a cold, thick smoothie.

Variations

Vegan version
Replace the milk with an oat drink and use agave rather than honey.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare it the night before?

Yes. The oats will thicken it overnight, so stir in a splash of milk in the morning.

Which oats should I use?

Fine, tender rolled oats blend best. Jumbo oats work if you soak them first.

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Yes, they are ideal and available all year.
