About this smoothie
Banana and chocolate are an old favourite, from banana splits to chocolate dipped fruit. This smoothie gets its chocolate taste from unsweetened baking cocoa, which contains no sugar and brings a deep, slightly bitter flavour. A ripe banana balances it naturally. Yoghurt and a little quark add protein and creaminess, and cinnamon rounds everything off.
The original recipe had no liquid at all, so this version adds milk to make it drinkable. It works well as breakfast, as a dessert alternative or after a workout.
Bartender tips
A frozen banana turns this smoothie into something close to a chocolate milkshake.
Sift the cocoa or blend it with the milk first so no dry lumps remain.
Variations
Mocha
Replace 50 ml of the milk with a cooled shot of espresso.
Frequently asked questions
Is this smoothie vegan?
Not as written. Use a plant drink, soy yoghurt and skip the quark for a vegan version.
Can I use drinking chocolate instead of cocoa?
You can, but it contains a lot of sugar. Unsweetened cocoa gives more flavour with less sweetness.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, it contains no caffeine beyond the small amount naturally in cocoa, and no added sugar.
