Instead of juice or milk, cooled fruit tea carries this smoothie. The avocado turns it thick and silky, while the tea adds a berry note without making it sweet.

Avocado Smoothie with Fruit Tea
Taste
Smooth and velvety, mildly fruity from the tea, with the gentle nutty note of ripe avocado.
About this smoothie
Using brewed tea as the liquid is an old trick from the smoothie kitchen: it adds aroma but hardly any calories, so the avocado can take centre stage. Avocado is known for its mostly unsaturated fats and gives the drink real body, which is why a single fruit is enough for a large glass.
The taste depends on the tea. A hibiscus or berry blend makes it tangy and faintly pink, an apple and cinnamon tea softer and rounder. It suits a light breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack.
Bartender tips
Brew the tea the evening before and keep it in the fridge, then the smoothie is cold without ice.
A strong berry or hibiscus blend gives more flavour than a mild apple tea.
Variations
Berry boost
Add 50 g frozen raspberries for a pinker colour and a tarter finish.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any fruit tea?
Yes. Berry and hibiscus blends taste the fruitiest, apple or peach blends are milder.
Is this smoothie vegan?
It is vegan if you leave out the honey or replace it with agave syrup.
Can I prepare it ahead?
It is best fresh, since cut avocado darkens. Covered in the fridge it keeps for a few hours.
