Avocado Basil Smoothie with Oat Milk

Avocado makes this smoothie incredibly smooth, almost like a thin cream. Basil gives it a fresh, peppery perfume, and oat milk adds a hint of sweetness.

Taste

Velvety and mild, buttery avocado with fresh basil and soft oat sweetness.

About this smoothie

Avocado is unusual among fruits because it is rich in fat rather than sugar, mostly monounsaturated fat, which gives smoothies a velvety texture. On its own it tastes mild and buttery, so it needs aromatic partners. Basil adds a fresh, slightly peppery note, and oat milk brings a natural, gentle sweetness.

The result is more savoury than a fruit smoothie and quite filling. A little honey or maple syrup can round it off. It suits breakfast or a light lunch.

Bartender tips

  • Drink it quickly: avocado darkens as it stands.
  • A squeeze of lemon helps keep the colour and brightens the flavour.

Variations

Fruity version
Add half a banana or a small pear for more sweetness.

Frequently asked questions

Is it vegan?

Yes, without honey or with maple syrup instead.

Can I use a whole avocado?

Yes, but add more oat milk, otherwise it becomes very thick.

Can I prepare it ahead?

Not really: it browns and loses its fresh aroma within a few hours.
