Avocado Apple Smoothie with Basil

Basil in a smoothie sounds unusual until you try it with apple: the herb adds a sweet, peppery perfume that makes the fruit taste even fresher. Avocado keeps it creamy.

Avocado Apple Smoothie with Basil

Taste

Creamy and smooth, fresh and fruity from the apple, with a sweet, peppery basil aroma.

About this smoothie

Apple and avocado are a classic smoothie pair: the apple brings sweetness and acidity, the avocado a creamy texture and mostly unsaturated fats. Basil is the surprise here. Its aroma is related to that of mint and works well with fruit, much like basil with strawberries.

The smoothie is light but still filling thanks to the avocado, which makes it a good breakfast or an afternoon snack. A sweet, crisp apple variety gives the best balance.

Bartender tips

  • Wrap the leftover avocado half with the stone in it and keep it in the fridge; it browns more slowly.
  • Use a sweet apple such as Gala or Fuji; a tart apple makes the drink sharper.

Variations

Lime twist
Add 1 tbsp lime juice for more freshness and a brighter colour.
