Pineapple Pear Smoothie with Basil

Basil and pineapple are a surprisingly good match: the herb adds a peppery, almost aniseed freshness to the sweet, tangy fruit. Pear and apple make it round and juicy.

About this smoothie

Fresh herbs have become a popular way to give fruit smoothies more depth, and basil works particularly well with sweet fruit. Its aroma is peppery with a hint of clove and aniseed, a lovely contrast to juicy pineapple.

Pear and apple add body, mild sweetness and fibre, pineapple brings acidity and vitamin C. The result tastes fresh rather than sweet. Use only a few leaves, as basil gets dominant quickly. A good smoothie for warm mornings.

Bartender tips

  • Add the basil at the end and blend only briefly to keep its aroma fresh.
  • Thai basil gives an even stronger aniseed note.

Variations

With lime
A squeeze of lime juice makes the smoothie even fresher.
