Apple Blackberry Smoothie with Avocado

Blackberries turn this smoothie a deep plum colour and give it a pleasant tartness. Avocado makes it creamy without any dairy, a little mint keeps it fresh.

About this smoothie

Apples and blackberries are a classic late summer pairing, familiar from crumbles and pies. In a smoothie the combination works just as well: the apple supplies sweetness, the blackberries acidity, colour and fibre.

Avocado adds a velvety texture and mild flavour, which turns a simple fruit drink into something more filling. A few mint leaves brighten the finish. With water as the only liquid it stays vegan and light, and it is ideal for using up blackberries from the garden or hedgerow.

Bartender tips

  • Frozen blackberries work very well and make the smoothie colder.
  • If the blackberries are very tart, add a teaspoon of honey or agave syrup.

Variations

With banana
Replace the avocado with a banana for a sweeter, lighter version.
