Mint Basil Smoothie

Mint brings coolness, basil a peppery, slightly sweet perfume, and spinach turns it all a deep green. It tastes more like a cold herb infusion than a fruit drink.

Garnish: No garnish · Ice: Served up, no ice

Method

  1. Wash the mint, basil and spinach and pick the herb leaves from the stems.
  2. Core the apple half if using and cut it into pieces.
  3. Blend everything with the cold water for about 45 seconds until smooth.
  4. Pour into a glass and drink fresh.

Taste

Very light and herbal: cool mint first, then peppery basil and a mild green note from the spinach.

About this smoothie

This is a smoothie for people who like green and herbal flavours rather than sweet fruit. Mint and basil both belong to the same plant family and share aromatic oils that give them their strong scent. Baby spinach is mild and adds colour, along with folate and vitamin K.

Without fruit the drink is barely sweet, so half an apple is listed as an option. It works as a refreshing glass on a hot day or alongside a light lunch.

Bartender tips

  • Use only the leaves: mint and basil stems taste woody and bitter.
  • A squeeze of lemon or lime brightens the herbs.

Variations

With cucumber
Add 80 g cucumber for a juicier, even more refreshing glass.
