Basil Banana Smoothie

A few basil leaves change a plain green smoothie completely. The rocket adds a faint peppery bite, the spinach keeps things soft, and a ripe banana makes the whole glass taste friendly rather than grassy.

Basil Banana Smoothie

Taste

Mildly sweet and green, with basil aroma up front and a gentle peppery finish from the rocket.

About this smoothie

Herbs are an easy way to give green smoothies more character. Basil brings a sweet, slightly clove like aroma, while rocket (arugula) contributes the mustard sharpness typical of the cabbage family. Baby spinach is the mildest of the three and mostly adds colour. A ripe banana with brown freckles is the key here: its sugar balances the bitterness of the leaves. The smoothie is light and refreshing, a good choice for a warm morning or as a mid afternoon break.

Bartender tips

  • Start with fewer rocket leaves if you are new to green smoothies; its bite gets stronger in the blender.
  • A squeeze of lemon keeps the colour bright green for longer.

Variations

Creamy basil
Add 2 tbsp natural yogurt or a splash of oat milk for a softer, rounder texture.

Frequently asked questions

Is the smoothie bitter?

Only slightly. The ripe banana balances the rocket; use a very ripe one if you are sensitive to bitterness.

Can I use dried basil?

No, dried basil tastes dusty in a smoothie. Use fresh leaves or leave it out.

Is it vegan?

Yes, it contains only banana, leaves, herbs and water.
