Tangerine Smoothie with Cinnamon

A tin of mandarins from the cupboard and one banana are all this smoothie needs. The cinnamon adds a warm note that makes it taste a little like winter baking.

About this smoothie

Canned mandarins are a handy smoothie base because they are always ripe, already peeled and come with their own sweet juice. Blended with banana they give a smooth, pale orange drink with no fibrous bits. A small amount of ground cinnamon brings warmth without making it spicy.

It works well as a quick breakfast when the fruit bowl is empty, or as a mild afternoon snack. Mandarins provide some vitamin C, banana adds body and natural sweetness, so no extra sugar is needed.

Bartender tips

  • Choose mandarins canned in juice rather than heavy syrup if you prefer it less sweet.
  • Freeze the banana in slices beforehand for a colder, thicker smoothie.

Variations

Fresh citrus
Replace the canned fruit with two peeled fresh mandarins or clementines and use water instead of the tin juice.
