Orange Pineapple Smoothie with Basil

Basil and orange are a surprisingly good match: the herb adds a sweet, slightly peppery scent that makes the citrus taste even fresher.

Ingredients

1

Garnish: Basil leaf · Ice: Served up, no ice

Method

  1. Peel the oranges, remove as much white pith as possible and cut them into pieces.
  2. Peel and core the pineapple and cut it into chunks.
  3. Wash the basil leaves.
  4. Blend everything with the lime juice and cold water for about 45 seconds and serve.

Taste

Juicy and bright with sweet orange, tropical pineapple, a sharp lime edge and fragrant basil.

About this smoothie

Using whole peeled oranges rather than juice keeps the fibre in the smoothie and gives it more body. Oranges and pineapple are both known for vitamin C, and lime juice sharpens the fruit. Fresh basil, more familiar from Italian cooking, brings a sweet, aniseed like aroma that pairs well with citrus.

The smoothie is juicy and refreshing, a good start to the day or a pick me up on hot afternoons.

Bartender tips

  • Remove the white pith of the oranges; it tastes bitter.
  • Chill the fruit beforehand for a cold smoothie without ice.

Variations

With mint
Swap the basil for mint for a cooler, more familiar herbal note.

Frequently asked questions

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, it contains only fruit, basil and water.

Can I use orange juice instead of whole oranges?

Yes, about 200 ml, but the smoothie will be thinner and have less fibre.

Which basil works best?

Regular Genovese basil; Thai basil has a stronger aniseed note.
