Mango Pineapple Smoothie with Basil

Basil and mango are a surprisingly good match: the herb brings a peppery, slightly clove-like note that makes the tropical fruit taste more complex.

About this smoothie

Sweet basil is best known from Italian cooking, but its aroma also works with fruit, particularly with mango, strawberries and pineapple. Here it gives a classic mango and pineapple smoothie a fresh, savoury twist. Mango provides creamy body and sweetness, pineapple juicy acidity, and half a banana a smooth texture. Both main fruits contain vitamin C. A glass for anyone who finds plain fruit smoothies a little too simple.

Bartender tips

  • Add the basil at the end and blend only briefly so it stays fresh and green.
  • Thai basil gives a stronger aniseed note if you like it.

Variations

With mint
Use mint instead of basil for a cooler, more familiar flavour.
