Grapefruit Lettuce Smoothie

Grapefruit and green leaves make a sharp, lively combination. The pear adds just enough sweetness to keep the bitterness in check.

About this smoothie

Lettuce and baby spinach add freshness, colour and volume without much flavour of their own, so the grapefruit sets the tone. Its bitter sweet acidity is balanced by a whole ripe pear, which also makes the smoothie thicker. Grapefruit is known for vitamin C, and the leafy greens contribute folate and vitamin K.\n\nThis is a bracing morning smoothie. Grapefruit can interact with several medications, so if you take any regularly, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Bartender tips

  • Use pink grapefruit for a sweeter taste.
  • A few mint leaves make it even fresher.

Variations

With cucumber
Swap the lettuce for a piece of cucumber for a cooler smoothie.
