Grapefruit Kiwi Smoothie
Taste
Juicy, tangy and bittersweet, with a creamy base from the banana.
About this smoothie
Grapefruit is loved for its mix of sweetness, acidity and light bitterness. Blended whole instead of juiced, it gives the smoothie more body and keeps the fibre of the fruit. Kiwi adds more acidity and its tiny seeds, while half a banana softens the drink and makes it creamier.
Pink or red grapefruits are sweeter than yellow ones and give a prettier colour. Note that grapefruit can interact with some medicines, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take regular medication.
Bartender tips
The white pith is the most bitter part: trim it well for a milder taste.
Use a pink grapefruit if you prefer a sweeter, softer smoothie.
Variations
Orange version
Replace half the grapefruit with an orange for a milder citrus mix.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my smoothie bitter?
Usually because of the white pith or seeds of the grapefruit. Trim them carefully.
Can I use grapefruit juice?
Yes, use about 150 ml fresh juice instead of the whole fruit and leave out the water.
