Basil Pear Smoothie with Mint Tea

Using cooled tea instead of water is an easy way to add flavour to a smoothie without sugar. Here peppermint tea meets basil and ripe pear, and the result tastes like a cool herb garden.

Basil Pear Smoothie with Mint Tea

Taste

Cool, herbal and mildly sweet, with juicy pear and a light, slightly thick texture.

About this smoothie

Peppermint tea gives this smoothie a clean, cooling note, and since it is a herbal tea it contains no caffeine. Juicy pear supplies the sweetness, while lamb's lettuce adds a mild green base. Basil brings a peppery aroma that goes surprisingly well with mint.

Chia seeds thicken the drink slightly and add some fibre. The smoothie is light, so it is best as a refreshing drink in the morning or afternoon rather than a full meal.

Bartender tips

  • Brew the tea the evening before and keep it in the fridge: then the smoothie is ready in two minutes.
  • If your pear is not very ripe, add 1 tsp honey or agave syrup.

Variations

Apple version
Use a sweet apple instead of pear for a crisper, slightly tangier smoothie.
