About this smoothie

Banana smoothies can be a little one note, and a spoon of marmalade is an easy way to change that. Classic Seville orange marmalade contains the peel, which brings a pleasant bitterness and a strong citrus aroma. Banana supplies creaminess and sweetness, and half a pear adds juice.

It is a quick breakfast smoothie using ingredients most kitchens already have. The marmalade adds some sugar, so one teaspoon is enough; a thick cut marmalade gives the most flavour.

Bartender tips

  • Use milk or oat drink instead of water for a creamier, more filling smoothie.
  • A frozen banana makes it thicker and colder.

Variations

Fresh orange
Replace the marmalade with half a peeled orange and a little grated zest.

Frequently asked questions

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, provided the marmalade contains no gelatine, which is standard.

Can I use orange jam instead?

Yes, but jam without peel tastes sweeter and less bitter.

Can I prepare it ahead?

It is best fresh, as the banana darkens and the flavour dulls after a few hours.
