Thick Banana Spinach Smoothie with Coconut Water

A whole banana per glass makes this green smoothie thick and creamy, almost like a shake. Coconut water keeps it light and adds a subtle, nutty sweetness.

About this smoothie

This is the fuller sibling of the lighter banana spinach smoothie: with a whole banana per glass it is thicker, sweeter and more filling. Bananas are a well-known source of potassium, and so is coconut water, which is why this combination is popular after a workout.

Baby spinach adds colour, vitamin K and folate but very little taste. If you want to get used to green smoothies, this is one of the easiest recipes to start with.

Bartender tips

  • Freeze sliced ripe bananas in advance: the smoothie becomes ice cold and even thicker.
  • Add a squeeze of lime if you want a little acidity.

Variations

With oat milk
Replace the coconut water with oat milk for a creamier, more filling version.

Frequently asked questions

Is this smoothie vegan?

Yes, banana, spinach and coconut water are all plant based.

Can I use water instead of coconut water?

Yes; it will be slightly less sweet.

Is it a good post-workout drink?

Banana and coconut water both provide carbohydrates and potassium, which many people like after exercise. It is a snack, not a replacement for a full meal.
