Bay Breeze
Taste
Tart cranberry and sweet, tropical pineapple with a clean vodka base. Light, fruity and refreshing, with low bitterness.
History and origin
The Bay Breeze is part of a family of simple vodka and cranberry highballs that became popular in the United States from the 1960s onwards, when cranberry juice producers actively promoted mixed drinks such as the Cape Codder. The Sea Breeze adds grapefruit juice to vodka and cranberry; the Bay Breeze swaps the grapefruit for pineapple, which makes it rounder and sweeter.
The drink is also known as a Hawaiian Sea Breeze or, in some regions, a Downeaster. No individual creator is recorded. Its appeal lies in its simplicity: three ingredients, no shaker, and a colour that shifts from deep red to coral as the juices mix.
Bartender tips
For a two-tone look, pour the pineapple juice first and the cranberry juice slowly on top.
A squeeze of fresh lime brightens the drink if your juices are on the sweet side.
Shake the pineapple juice briefly with ice beforehand for a light, frothy top.
