About this smoothie

Dates have been used as a sweetener in North Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years, and in smoothies they replace sugar or honey neatly. They also bring fibre and some minerals such as potassium. Pear provides juicy sweetness, apple a bit of acidity, and almond milk a mild, nutty base.

This smoothie fits breakfast or an afternoon snack. Soft Medjool dates blend easily; firmer dates should soak in warm water for 10 minutes so no chewy pieces remain.

Bartender tips

  • Use unsweetened almond milk so the date can provide all the sweetness.
  • A pinch of cinnamon or cardamom suits pear and date very well.
