Green Smoothie with Blackberries

Tart green apple and dark blackberries give this leafy smoothie plenty of flavour. The spinach and lettuce stay in the background, adding freshness rather than a grassy taste.

About this smoothie

Green smoothies combine leafy vegetables with fruit, and the fruit choice decides whether the result tastes fresh or grassy. Tart green apple and blackberries bring enough acidity and aroma to carry the spinach and lettuce comfortably.

The colour will not be bright green: blackberries turn it an earthy olive brown, which is normal. Leafy greens add folate and fibre, blackberries vitamin C. A light, low sugar option for breakfast or a mid morning drink.

Bartender tips

  • Add half a banana if you prefer a sweeter, creamier green smoothie.
  • Put the leaves in with the water first and blend them briefly before adding the fruit; they break down more finely.

Variations

Berry mix
Replace half the blackberries with blueberries for a sweeter, darker glass.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my smoothie brown rather than green?

The dark blackberry pigments mix with the green of the leaves. It is normal and does not affect the taste.

Is it vegan?

Yes, it contains only fruit, leaves and water.

Can I use kale instead of spinach?

Yes, but use less and remove the stems; kale tastes stronger.
