Ginger Smoothie with Pears

Ripe pear and ginger are a quietly brilliant match: sweet and floral meets warm and peppery. Half a banana gives the smoothie a softer, creamier body.

About this smoothie

Pear and ginger turn up together in chutneys, cakes and poached fruit, and the pairing works just as well cold in a glass. A ripe pear is juicy, fragrant and naturally sweet, and the ginger adds warmth that stops the smoothie tasting one dimensional.

Pears provide fibre, especially with the skin on, and bananas add potassium. It is a simple, comforting smoothie for autumn and winter, when pears are at their best.

Bartender tips

  • Williams or Conference pears are juicy and aromatic; they should give slightly at the stem.
  • A pinch of cinnamon underlines the autumn flavour.

Variations

Pear ginger oat
Blend in 1 tbsp rolled oats and replace the water with oat milk for a breakfast version.
