Ginger Kiwi Smoothie with Basil

Tart kiwi and sharp ginger make this a wake-up smoothie rather than a dessert. Basil softens the edges with its sweet, peppery aroma.

About this smoothie

Kiwis are among the fruits richest in vitamin C and have a pleasant acidity that makes smoothies taste fresh. Their tiny black seeds add a little crunch when blended only briefly.

Ginger and basil are both common in Asian cooking, and together they give the kiwi a savoury, almost lemonade-like character. The drink is light and not very sweet, so it works well before breakfast or after exercise. If you prefer it softer, the optional honey rounds it off.

Bartender tips

  • Very ripe kiwis are sweeter and need no honey; firm ones are noticeably sharper.
  • Keep blending time short, as crushed kiwi seeds can taste bitter.

Variations

With banana
Add half a banana for a creamier, sweeter smoothie.

Frequently asked questions

Is this smoothie vegan?

Without honey, yes. Use agave or maple syrup if you want to sweeten it.

Can I peel kiwis easily?

Cut off both ends and scoop the flesh out with a teaspoon; that is the quickest way.

Is it very spicy?

With 5 g ginger it has a noticeable but gentle warmth. Adjust the amount to your taste.
