Coconut Apple Smoothie with Pear

This one tastes a bit like apple pie filling in liquid form, only fresh. Apple and pear give fruitiness, milk the creaminess, and coconut oil a subtle tropical warmth.

Coconut Apple Smoothie with Pear

Taste

Mild and creamy, with fresh apple, soft pear and a faint coconut aroma.

About this smoothie

Apples and pears are available all year and make an easy, inexpensive smoothie base. Blended with milk they become soft and creamy, similar to a fruit shake. Apples provide fibre, much of it in the skin, and milk adds protein and calcium. The teaspoon of coconut oil gives a delicate coconut aroma; since it is mostly saturated fat, a small amount is enough. A pinch of cinnamon turns the glass into an autumn favourite. Good for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Bartender tips

  • Coconut oil sets when cold; melt it gently and blend it with the room temperature ingredients first, so it does not form small flakes.
  • A sweet apple variety such as Gala or Pink Lady makes sweetening unnecessary.

Variations

Apple cinnamon
Add a pinch of cinnamon and 1 tbsp rolled oats for a breakfast version.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there coconut oil in a smoothie?

It adds a light coconut aroma and a rounder mouthfeel. It is mostly saturated fat, so a teaspoon is enough, and you can leave it out.

Can I use plant milk?

Yes, oat or almond milk works well and makes it vegan.

Do I need to peel the apple?

No, just wash it; the skin blends in well.
