Rocket brings a peppery, slightly bitter bite that you do not usually find in a smoothie. Sweet pineapple and tart blackberries keep it balanced and fruity.

Blackberry Rocket Smoothie with Pineapple
Taste
Fruity and tangy, with sweet pineapple, dark berry notes and a light peppery finish.
About this smoothie
Rocket, also called arugula, is the most assertive leaf in this collection. Its mustard-like pepperiness comes from the same family of compounds found in cabbage and radish. In a smoothie it works best in a small amount and with plenty of sweet fruit, which is why pineapple is such a good partner: its sugar and acidity round off the sharpness.
Blackberries add color, fiber and a winey berry note. The result is fruity at first and slightly spicy at the end, a good smoothie for people who already like green blends and want something with more character.
Bartender tips
Start with less rocket; its sharpness varies a lot between batches.
Half a banana softens the pepperiness if it comes through too strongly.
Variations
Milder version
Replace half the rocket with lamb's lettuce or baby spinach.
Frequently asked questions
Does rocket make the smoothie bitter?
In this amount it tastes slightly peppery rather than bitter; the pineapple balances it.
What can I use instead of rocket?
