Berry Rocket Smoothie with Chia Seeds

Two kinds of frozen fruit make this a proper icy smoothie with no ice cubes. Chia seeds give it body, and rocket adds a small peppery kick.

About this smoothie

This smoothie keeps things simple: frozen fruit, one green and a spoon of chia. Strawberries bring sweetness, the mixed berries more tartness and colour. Rocket is used in small amounts so it seasons rather than dominates.

Chia seeds absorb liquid and slowly thicken the drink, so it gets creamier the longer it stands. They are known as a source of fibre and plant omega-3 fatty acids. With water as the base, the smoothie stays light and fruity.

Bartender tips

  • If the smoothie gets too thick after standing, stir in a splash of water.
  • A teaspoon of honey or agave syrup helps if your berries are very tart.

Variations

Creamy version
Replace the water with oat milk or almond milk.

Can I prepare it the night before?
