Blueberry Rocket Smoothie with Apple

Rocket in a smoothie sounds unusual, but a small amount gives blueberries and apple a pleasant, peppery edge. The colour stays a deep purple.

About this smoothie

Rocket, also called arugula, is known for its nutty, peppery flavour, which comes from the same kind of compounds as in mustard and radish. In a smoothie a little goes a long way: 15 g adds character without taking over.

Blueberries bring colour, tartness and fibre, and the red apple supplies sweetness and body. The combination is less sweet than a typical fruit smoothie and has more depth. Try it as a morning drink if you like flavours that are a bit more grown up.

Bartender tips

  • Use young, tender rocket; older leaves can be quite sharp.
  • Frozen blueberries give a colder, thicker smoothie.

Variations

Milder
Replace half of the rocket with baby spinach for a gentler green note.
