Banana Strawberry Smoothie with Chia Seeds
Taste
Fruity and sweet, with ripe strawberry, creamy banana and a light, pleasant crunch from the chia.
About this smoothie
Chia seeds come from a plant in the sage family native to Mexico and Central America. They absorb many times their weight in liquid and form a soft gel, which is why a smoothie with chia gets thicker the longer it stands. They provide fibre and the plant omega 3 fatty acid ALA. Paired with ripe strawberries and banana, they make a fruity drink that is also quite filling. A good choice for breakfast on the go.
Bartender tips
Soak the chia seeds in the water for 10 minutes first if you prefer a smoother texture.
Frozen strawberries make it thicker and colder in summer.
Variations
Vegan
Replace the whole milk with oat or almond milk.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my smoothie get thick?
Chia seeds absorb liquid and swell; stir in a little water if it gets too thick.
Can I use frozen strawberries?
Yes, they work very well.
Do I have to grind the chia seeds?
No, a blender breaks up some of them; whole seeds are also fine to eat.
