Apple Kiwi Smoothie with Kale and Spinach

Taste

Fresh, fruity and lightly tart, with a mild green note and a medium body.

About this smoothie

Kale is the ingredient that sounds intimidating, but one leaf in a fruity mix is barely noticeable. Kiwis are known for their high vitamin C content, and apple gives sweetness and a juicy body, so no extra sugar is needed. Baby spinach blends easily and makes the colour a deep green.

The smoothie is light, so it fits breakfast alongside something more filling, or as an afternoon drink. Children often like it more than they expect, thanks to its fruity taste.

Bartender tips

  • Blend the greens with the water first, then add the fruit: this gives a smoother result in weaker blenders.
  • Kiwi seeds can taste bitter if blended very long, so do not run the blender for minutes.

Variations

Pear version
Swap the apple for a ripe pear for a softer, sweeter smoothie.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen kale?

Yes, frozen kale works well and makes the smoothie colder.

Is it vegan?

Yes, it contains only fruit, greens and water.

Can I prepare it the night before?

It keeps for up to a day in a closed jar in the fridge, but the colour gets duller. Shake well before drinking.
