The Astro Pop shot is named after the Astro Pop, a rocket-shaped, three-coloured American lollipop that has been sold since the 1960s. The drink imitates the candy's coloured bands with grenadine, a pale raspberry sour and blue curaçao.
Who first poured it is unknown. The shot belongs to the family of colourful, sweet party shooters that became popular in American bars from the 1980s onwards, when layered shots and flavoured vodkas were at the height of fashion. This version uses fresh lemon juice and syrup in place of bottled sour mix and keeps the portions small, which makes the layers easier to build and the drink more pleasant.
