Orange Smoothie with Basil

Basil and orange sound unusual together, but the sweet, peppery herb lifts the citrus beautifully. Nectarine gives the drink a softer, fuller body.

Taste

Fresh and citrusy, with sweet nectarine and a clear, peppery basil note in the finish.

About this smoothie

Basil is often paired with strawberries or tomatoes, and it works just as well with citrus. Its sweet, slightly peppery aroma makes the orange taste fresher and more complex. Oranges provide plenty of vitamin C and juice, and the nectarine adds smooth texture and stone fruit sweetness.

This light smoothie is good in the morning or as a refreshing drink on a warm afternoon. Use Genovese basil with large, soft leaves; Thai basil has an anise note that would change the character of the drink.

Bartender tips

  • Add the basil at the end and blend only briefly if you want the herb flavour to stay fresh and green.
  • Chill the oranges beforehand so no ice is needed.

Variations

With strawberries
Replace the nectarine with 100 g strawberries for a sweeter, pink version.
