Orange Physalis Smoothie with Ginger
Taste
Tangy and zesty with a warming ginger note, a hint of exotic physalis and a medium body.
About this smoothie
Physalis, also called cape gooseberry or golden berry, grows inside a papery husk and tastes sweet, tart and a little exotic, somewhere between pineapple and tomato. It fits naturally with orange juice, and a small piece of ginger adds warmth. Banana gives body, so the drink is more than juice.
Oranges and physalis are both good sources of vitamin C, which makes this smoothie a welcome choice in winter. Remove the husks and rinse the berries, as they can feel slightly sticky. Unripe, greenish physalis should not be eaten; use only fully golden ones.
Bartender tips
Only use fully golden physalis; green, unripe ones should not be eaten.
Grate the ginger for an even heat without fibrous bits.
Variations
Mango twist
Replace the banana with half a mango for a more tropical, smoother glass.
