Blueberry Blackberry Smoothie with Dates

Two dates are all the sweetener this berry smoothie needs. They add a caramel-like depth that goes wonderfully with tart blackberries.

About this smoothie

Dates are the dried fruit of the date palm and are very sweet, with a flavour reminiscent of caramel and honey. They also contain fibre, which makes them a popular natural sweetener for smoothies.

Here they balance the tartness of the blackberries, while blueberries add a softer sweetness. Milk makes the smoothie creamy and adds protein and calcium. A good choice for anyone who wants to avoid added sugar but still likes a sweet smoothie.

Bartender tips

  • Soak dry dates in warm water for 10 minutes so they blend more easily.
  • Soft Medjool dates are sweeter and blend best.

Variations

Vegan version
