Lynchburg Lemonade

Taste

Sweet and tart with bright citrus, a gentle whiskey warmth and plenty of fizz. Light and very drinkable.

History and origin

The drink is named after Lynchburg, Tennessee, home of the Jack Daniel's distillery, but it was created in Huntsville, Alabama. The usual account credits Tony Mason, who owned a restaurant and bar there and developed the recipe around 1980.

In the 1980s the distillery promoted a Lynchburg Lemonade recipe nationally. Mason took Jack Daniel's to court, arguing that his recipe had been used without permission, and the case is still cited in trade secret law because it raised the question of whether a drink that any guest can taste can be a secret at all. Today the drink is a widely known whiskey highball served in bars across the United States.

Bartender tips

  • Keep the soda very cold and pour it slowly down a bar spoon to preserve the bubbles.
  • If your soda is very sweet, leave out the simple syrup.
  • For a pitcher, mix the whiskey, triple sec and lemon in advance and add soda and ice at the last moment.

Variations

Bourbon Lemonade
Use bourbon instead of Tennessee whiskey for a spicier, oakier version.
Raspberry Lynchburg
Add 15 ml raspberry syrup or liqueur before shaking.
