Vanilla, caramel and a little charred oak from the whiskey meet the sweet spice and fizz of cola. Lots of ice, a squeeze of lime if you like, and you have a drink that needs no introduction.

Jack and Coke
Taste
Sweet and fizzy, with vanilla, caramel and light oak under the cola spice. Easy-drinking and medium-light in strength.
History and origin
Whiskey and cola became a standard pairing early in the 20th century, when cola drinks spread across the United States and bartenders began using them as a mixer in highballs. The Jack and Coke is the best-known branded version of that simple formula, built on Jack Daniel's, the Tennessee whiskey from Lynchburg.
Tennessee whiskey is made much like bourbon but is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before ageing, which gives it a soft, slightly sweet character that suits cola well. The drink has no single inventor; it grew with the worldwide popularity of the brand and has become one of the most common highball orders in bars everywhere.
Bartender tips
More ice, not less: a full glass keeps the drink colder and slows dilution.
A ratio of about 1 to 3 keeps the whiskey present; go up to 1 to 4 for a lighter drink.
Cola from a glass bottle or can tastes fizzier than from a large plastic bottle that has been opened.
